Did you hear them? I did. If you were up late last night or super early this morning, you may have heard birds, lots of birds, flying overhead. It’s estimated that there were over 55 million birds flying across Kansas and Missouri last night. 55 million! The migratory birds were flying at altitudes between 1,000 and 3,000 feet. The peak dates for the bird migrations is May 3rd through the 9th. And, these aren’t just the big geese and ducks you expect to see flying, but little birds like warblers, flycatchers, buntings, orioles and other smaller birds.

You may see some flying during the day, but most migrate at night. It don’t know what type of bird was flying over KOFO this morning at 2:00am, but they were seriously loud. I couldn’t see them, but there were a lot. Wildlife experts are asking that people turn their outside lights off the next few nights as the migrations continues. Having lights off will help prevent any collisions with buildings, if they decide to fly lower. For more information about the migration happening now, check out the bird cast web site.
