We now know details of the horrific crash that left 8 people dead in southern Franklin County Sunday, May 4th. A vehicle driven by 33-year-old Jaimon Gilstrap of Tulsa, Oklahoma was southbound on 169 highway and attempted to pass another vehicle and in the northbound lane encountered a vehicle driven by 37-year-old alexander Ernst of Ames, Iowa. The two attempted to avoid each other, but went in the same direction and collided head on. Gilstrap, 14-year-old Kyon Gilstrap of Tulsa, 14-year-old Donald, DJ, Laster of Tulsa, and 41-year-old Wayne Walls of Talala, Oklahoma died in the crash. Another passenger, 15-year-old Braden Walls survived and is recovering at a Kansas City hospital.
The second driver, Ernst, also died in the crash, as did his passengers 76-year-old John Chesterfield, 33-year-old Madalyn Elliot, and 69-year-old Norleen Elliott, all from Chesterfield, Missouri.
The teens and their coaches were returning home to Oklahoma from an AAU basketball tournament in Kansas City.
