As we enter our first real heat of the spring season, temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to upper 80’s this week…it’s important to remind you that heat is the number one weather related killer in the United States and while this isn’t like our mid summer heat, your body may not be ready for it or used to it. Some quick reminders, never leave children or pets alone in a closed car. Temperatures inside the car can reach lethal levels in just a matter of minutes. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty and avoid drinks like soda. Also, wear loose fitting, light colored clothing, and finally, spend time in an air conditioned room or in a shady locations.

If you are outside, take frequent breaks and be sure to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Speaking with an AdventHealth Ottawa nurse earlier in the week, she told me they have already started seeing people that have mild heat illness and have found that most are dehydrated. Enjoy the warm weather, just be sure to respect the heat.
