One Osawatomie High School graduate who walked across the stage last night, almost didn’t make that far. Owen Bell almost died after collapsing during a basketball practice October 27th, 2022. The medical emergency left Bell with permanent injuries, including a severe brain injury that has affected his mobility, speech, memory, and cognitive functions.
He returned to the school a year later to wild support from his classmates. Bell’s right foot and ankle were severely impacted. He struggles daily with mobility. He was crowned the Osawatomie Winter Homecoming King. This year he was able to attend prom, and finally, last night’s graduation ceremony.
However, he has a long road ahead for recovery, still facing issues with mobility and walking. His mom says the rehab doctor believes a specific treatment could improve his mobility and help him walk again, but, their insurance won’t cover the treatment, and it is too expensive for them to cover out of pocket. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to assist in getting that needed treatment. In the meantime, Owen and his family are grateful for all the support the community has shown to them and Owen remains determined to come back strong. Congratulations Owen on your graduation and good luck in all your future endeavors.
