Spring is finally here and a lot of people are out getting their yards mowed and looking good for the upcoming season. But, beware…precious lives are in the balance and at your mercy. It’s baby rabbit season and many time, nests are tucked into the tall tufts of grass in people’s yard. Now, your first instinct may be pity and concern. You may be tempted to “save” them and take them indoors, but, that will likely cause more problems for the bunnies.
While it may appear they are abandoned because mama rabbit isn’t around, Kansas Wildlife officials say that mother rabbits return to feed their little ones twice a day, dawn and dusk, staying with the babies only a few minutes before leaving again. The best thing to do is… leave them alone. However, if you touch one, touch them all so they will all smell the same to the mother.
If you find a baby rabbit that is injured, they suggest you call “Operation Wildlife” in Linwood, keep them warm and don’t feed them. Operation Wildlife says feeding the bunnies the wrong foods and drinks can harm them or even lead to their death.
