Today is a very special day in Ottawa. The Special Olympics Torch will be arriving in Ottawa this morning. The Lawrence Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will pass the torch to the Ottawa Police at Kalmar at noon today. Locally, Kalmar has been the Guardian of the Flame since 2011. Their sponsorship of the Torch Run supports Special Olympics Kansas events and athletes statewide, but also locally with direct support of uniforms and equipment for local programs in and around Ottawa.

Tomorrow morning, June 4th, the torch will be carried through Ottawa by athletes from COG and the Wildfire’s. About 9:00, they will start at Kansas State Bank North and walk through Downtown Ottawa to 5th Street, where officers will start running to Club Car Wash. They will transition to bikes and ride down Old 50 to Beto Junction and hand the torch off to Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and Emporia Police.

Friday morning, June 6th at 10, athletes from COF will get a police escort through town as they depart for the State Summer Games in Maize. People are encouraged to line the streets to cheer them on!
