Summer is here and you and the family are going to be out and about, sometimes exploring the great outdoors far from civilization. Or, at least far enough it would be tough to find you in an emergency. What would you do if you needed help and really didn’t know where you were or weren’t able to tell dispatch where you were. The Miami County Emergency Management Service and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office are encouraging people to download an app called “what 3 words”. The app can quickly share your exact location with 911 using a “what3words” address—even in hard-to-describe or remote areas.

Officials are encouraging everyone to download the “what 3 words” app before setting out on long drives or hikes into remote areas. It’s simple to use. First download the app. Once you open it, the GPS will locate you on a map. Tap the arrow and the three words for your location will display at the top of the screen. Read the three words to dispatch and they will track you to within 10 feet of your location. Make sure to download it on your phone and your kids phones…just in case.
