You know it’s summer when the blue green algae watches and warning start coming out. If you headed to the lake to do a little boating or swimming this weekend, be aware that Clinton Lake in Douglas County is under an algae watch. This means that an algae outbreak is possible. If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algae bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

If you see what you think may be blue green algae, report it to the lake officials. In the meantime, enjoy your time at the lake or any of the many state parks and recreations areas.
