The new black out style license plate available to Kansas drivers is expected to be a big seller, but, it’s going to cost you. There is a one time plate fee of $40, an annual royalty fee of $50 and, if you get it personalized, another $45 fee.
The new plates have an all-black background with sharp white lettering, which makes them stand out. Kansas lawmakers approved the new plates earlier this year, with Kelly giving them the green light near the end of the 2025 session of the State Legislature.
The state expects around 30,000 blackout plates to sell in the first year alone, providing over $2.5 million dollars in revenue. Most of that money would go to the newly created License Plate Replacement Fund to be used by the department to replace license plates that are past their lifespan.
