As the heat of the summer grows more intense, Garnett Fire Department Chief Wes Skillman would like to remind people that all burning needs to have a permit. There is no cost involved and all you have to do is call Anderson County Communications to get one. If there is a burn ban in place you will be informed when calling the number. If you don’t get a permit, you could be issued a ticket. There are restrictions on what you can, and can not burn. You can’t burn any construction materials , especially trash consisting of leather, rubber, plastic, organic material, or any other substance which produces odor within the city.

What can you burn? Chief Skillman says brush, leaves and other yard waste can be burned with a permit. After you get the permit, light the fire and stay with it. Extinguish the fire before you leave. Also, remember not to burn in any public right of way and make sure there are no utility lines overhead. It’s always a good idea to have a source of water nearby, just in case it begins to spread, or you have to leave the fire scene.
