An Extreme Heat Warning goes into effect from noon today, July 19th, until 7:00 Wednesday evening, July 23rd, for Franklin, Anderson, Douglas and Osage Counties and until 7:00 Thursday evening, July 24th, for Miami and Linn Counties. Dangerously hot conditions with a heat index up to 107 are expected. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat strike.
Remember to never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. To reduce risk during outdoor work, it’s recommended that you schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. If you are overcome by heat stroke, you should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Remember, heat strike is an emergency, call 911.
