The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae in many Kansas lakes, including some in the KOFO listening area. In Osage County: Melvern Outlet River Pond and Swim Pond are under a watch–meaning algae bloom is possible and may be present. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities in or on the water, such as swimming, boating and fishing.
The harmful algae blooms may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water, and will be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly and their toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation and even skin contact. Symptoms from blooms can range from a headache and sore throat, to as extreme as vomiting and diarrhea. If you or your pets come in contact with algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB related health incidents should be reported as soon as possible to KDHE.ks.gov.
