Last weekend, a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and killed while approaching the front door of a home where they were to conduct a civil stand by for a woman who asked officers to accompany her as she moved out of the house, she had safety concerns due to a history of domestic violence. One of the deputies on the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department was in the same class as Deputy Elijah Ming. Sheriff Jeff Richards says sometimes incidents hit a little closer to home:
Deputies from Miami and Linn County also attended the memorial. Richards added that it was extra tough, as last week was the 15th anniversary of the death of Deputy Sam Smith. Smith died in an accident while responding to a domestic disturbance call on July 23rd of 2010, which somewhat mirrors the call Ming was on. Smith is the only Franklin County Deputy to die in the line of duty.
