The City of Garnett looking to fund some big projects with a one cent sale tax, if voters approve it in November. City Manager Travis Wilson included a summary of the proposal of the July utility bills recently received in the mail by city utility customers. The new sales tax would primarily function to fund a new swimming pool. The 80-year-old pool in Lake Garnett Park has been a financial and operational concern for the last several years.
There are a number of other city infrastructure projects officials say could use funding, like enhancements to city sports complexes to improve drainage and the addition of high-performance turf to reduce rain outs and extend field life. Funds would also be used to modernize restrooms at Crystal Lake and Lake Garnett locations; add new playground equipment, and new electric camping facilities to boost park usage; LED lighting to encourage evening events at the city’s Go Kart Sprint Track and other park improvements in picnic area’s pathway repairs and outdoor facilities. Half of the tax revenue would go to help pay for Garnett’s new waste water treatment plant.
