Kansas could soon see higher state park fees, and the public will get a chance to weigh in at meetings across the state this fall. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is proposing increases to both camping and vehicle permits. Officials say the hikes are needed because park costs have gone up nearly 45% since 2016.

Several meetings to discuss the issue will take place over the next couple months. The first is coming up tomorrow at the Hillsdale State Park Shooting Range in Paola, at 5:00 in the afternoon. Fees for overnight camping, vehicle permits, park passports, and daily entry could more than double. Kansas Wildlife and Parks Director Conner O’Flannagan says the proposed changes are necessary to ensure our parks remain safe, well-maintained, and accessible.
