Osawatomie State Hospital has announced they are tearing down two historic buildings on the hospital’s campus. The Carmichael and Rush buildings are on the south side of campus. The two buildings played a vital role in the hospital’s early years. The facebook post says that the hospital is deeply committed to preserving their history and honoring the significance of the buildings and artifacts while telling their story. They go on to say that unfortunately, after sitting vacant for a long time, they are too costly to maintain and repair and pose safety concerns for both staff and patients.
They add that it’s difficult to say goodbye to such meaningful parts of the campus, but remain steadfast in their mission—to create a safe, supportive environment for those who need the care that Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair acute Care Unit provide. They are dedicated to continuing fostering new programs, initiatives, and hope, for individuals across the state of Kansas for many years to come.
