The Miami County Sheriff’s Office has released their statistics for August. There were 1,452 calls for service, 140 traffic stops, 31 citations issued, and 27 reported accidents. They report 5 cases each of battery, theft, and burglary, along with three mental health crisis incidents. Also, 82 outside agency assists.
So, what’s the difference between burglary and theft? Burglary is the unlawful entry into a structure with the intent to commit a crime. It doesn’t have to be theft, it could be assault, vandalism or something else. Theft is when someone intentionally takes or uses another person’s property or services without permission to deprive the owner of its use.
They offer some tips to prevent burglary from happening to you. First, install a security system, cameras and motion activated lights. Next secure and lock all windows and doors including vehicles and outbuildings. Next, maintain the property by trimming hedges and trees and don’t leave valuables in plain sight through windows or doors. Doing a few little things will make your home, outbuilding, and vehicle more secure and less likely to fall victim to burglary and theft.
