A very busy week for local law enforcement and first responders. Tuesday afternoon just after 4:00, the Franklin County Sheriff’s office was contacted by the Kansas City, Missouri police about a stolen vehicle parked at Anderson Tire north of Ottawa. When deputies attempted to contact the driver, he jumped out and fled on foot into a large cornfield to the north. Additional officers were called to the scene to contain that person in the field and prevent his further escape, including the Ottawa Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team, who established a perimeter.

After some time, a sheriff department K-9 officer was called to the scene and deployed into the field. Twenty-one year old Erik Nightengale quickly came out of the field and was taken into custody without incident, before the K-9 made contact with him. Nightengale is charged with possession of stolen property, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
