A meeting regarding the proposed new sales tax in Garnett will be held tonight, October 7th, and a big crowd is expected. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting and provide comments on the proposal. The proposal, detailed in a city report, would generate an estimated $600,000 annually to repair and upgrade the Lake Garnett Complex, including the city swimming pool, ballfields, campgrounds, a performance amphitheater and other community amenities. City leaders say the plan represents the fairest way to pay for the projects, spreading the cost across residents, visitors, and travelers who shop in town, rather than raising property taxes. The information released mentions infrastructure and Mayor Marke Locke insists that the focus be on replacing the entire wastewater sewer system in the city of Garnett, that is aging and crumbling also.
If approved, the sales tax would sunset after 15 years, with officials estimating that the gradual funding plan would allow phased completion of projects while avoiding new debt. There will be a public meeting tonight where more information will be presented to the public. It will be held at 6:00 tonight at Town Hall Center.
