Late Thursday night, October 9th, the Miami County Sheriff’s Department took a patient into custody after they escaped from the Osawatomie State Hospital. That afternoon, shortly after 3:00, the Osawatomie Police Department responded to the Osawatomie State Hospital after receiving a report that a patient had escaped and fled the property.
Officers immediately arrived on scene and began checking the surrounding area. Thanks to alert citizens who reported a suspicious person, officers located the individual traveling on a bicycle near 169 highway. As officers approached, the subject fled into a wooded and swampy area on the west side of the highway, just south of main street.
The Sheriff’s office responded to assist OPD by providing multiple units to help establish a perimeter. At approximately 5:00 Thursday afternoon, a resident inside the perimeter reported seeing the subject. Deputies quickly responded and detained the individual without incident. The Osawatomie Police Department took custody of the subject after they were evaluated by EMS. The individual was then returned to the Osawatomie State Hospital.
