If you’re seeing more moths than usual around your home, you’re far from alone. The big question is… why?. Experts say that the reason moth populations seem to be thriving more than we’re used to seeing is due to the weather conditions Kansas had this summer. Entomologists says a fairly mild summer with a lot of rain, provided very good conditions for them to flourish.

The lifespan of the moths we’re seeing can be 15 to 30 days, they’re mostly harmless and most of the moths will be gone once colder weather enters our area. K-State Research and Extension Agent Matt McKernon says most of the moths we are seeing right now are migratory and are just moving through the area as temperatures cool off for fall. In the meantime, if they are “bugging” you experts advise that turning lights off in your home is one effective strategy to avoid attracting moths. Another tip is to treat your lawn next year to avoid where they place eggs and eventually hatch.
