October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month law enforcement unite as they emphasize and advocate to end domestic violence. More than one in three women and one in four men in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

According to the Miami County Sheriff’s Department, in 2021 in Miami county, 147 cases were reported to law enforcement. In 2022, 117 cases were reported. In 2023 169 cases were reported and in 2024 191 cases, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations. There were probably many more as domestic violence is the most underreported crime in America.

If you or anybody you know is a victim of these crimes, don’t wait, call 911. There is also help available at the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233. You can also text 88788. Help is out there. Don’t suffer in silence. Call, you can get help.
