With the word that SNAP food benefits will not be distributed in November, many families are worried about how to put food on the table. A new program called the Blessing Bag is helping kids in need, from kindergarten to 5th grade. The Franklin County Farm Bureau, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, CASA of the 4th District, and Ad Astra Advocacy Center and many other organizations, are putting together bags filled with non perishable food items such as ramen noodles, pop tarts, crackers, Kellogg’s mix snacks, applesauce cups, mini water bottles and much more. The bags will be distributed to K-5 students in all the schools who are facing food insecurity. Each Friday, kids in need will take home a bag filled with food items.
These Blessing Bags offer a boost to what Harvesters and other food services can currently offer. They have also experienced budget cuts, so the bags help provide support, but they do not replace what is currently provided. Now more than ever, it’s critical to fill the gaps. You can help. Donations are being accepted at the Sheriff’s office, Pomona Community Library and the Ad Astra Center at 322 Main in Ottawa.
