An Ottawa resident, who lives on the corner of 15th and Ash, is working to make the intersection safer. Alexandria Cain’s efforts came about after a 12-year-old was struck by a car at the intersection in early October. The boy entered the crosswalk on the south side of 15th and was struck by a west bound car in the north lane of traffic on 15th.
Cain is sending a formal letter to the City of Ottawa requesting increased safety measures and permanent solution to protect children and families using the busy street. She is asking the city to take specific steps. First, in the short term, a highly visible ladder style crosswalk marking on all legs of the intersection. Also advanced signage and several other items. In the long term, she asks for a count of pedestrians, vehicles and approach speeds as well as a spot speed study during peak school times. There are several other requests in the letter.
The 12 year old boy who was recently struck was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital and treated for a concussion and a gash to his head that required 8 stitches as well as receiving many cuts and scrapes to his legs and torso.
