An Osage County man is dead and four law enforcement officers shot after an incident near Carbondale Saturday morning, November 15th. The Osage County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at 11222 S. Topeka Avenue, after a female resident called 911. Once on scene, officers encountered 22-year-old Stephen McMillan outside the residence. He opened fire on the officers. Three deputies and two KHP troopers returned fire. In the shootout, three deputies, one trooper, the suspect and a male resident were struck. The male resident was identified as the suspect’s 77-year-old grandfather.

All law enforcement officers were transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. The trooper, Adam Ellis, was later transferred to KU Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his wounds. The Kansas Highway Patrol says he has a long road to recovery. Two deputies from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office underwent surgery and are in good condition, and the other was discharged from the hospital after treatment. The suspect’s grandfather was also injured and taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. McMillan was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No details of what led to the 911 call or the domestic incident were released pending an ongoing investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
