An Ottawa Resident who wrote a letter to the City of Ottawa asking for safety upgrades at the 15th and Ash intersection has seen some progress. Alexandria Cain, who lives on the corner, wrote the letter after a 12-year old cross country runner was hit by a car there in early October. She asked the city to take specific steps. First, in the short term, a highly visible ladder style crosswalk marking on all legs of the intersection. Also advanced signage and several other items. In the long term, she asks for a count of pedestrians, vehicles and approach speeds as well as a spot speed study during peak school times. There are several other requests in the letter. In a follow up letter, she says she is encouraged about the quick response, as she says someone from the city is taking measurements for signage and markings. She asks for further updates on the review of the intersection.
The 12-year-old boy who was struck, was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital and treated for a concussion and a gash to his head that required 8 stitches as well as receiving many cuts and scrapes to his legs and torso.
