The United States Civil War rocked the Nation from 1861 to 1865 and led to some incredible battles with unimaginable losses for both sides, the Union and the Confederacy. It led to the end of slavery and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. There are so many stories to tell and, though you and I think we may know a lot about the Civil War…we don’t know nearly as much as a local author that is giving a presentation tonight. Ottawa resident, and Civil War expert, Matt Matthews, will talk about the book “Abolitionist of the Most Dangerous Kind: James Montgomery and his Civil War on Slavery”… during a Civil War Round Table. It explores the radical and militant life of the abolitionist, James Montgomery. The book details his role as a Kansas “Jayhawker,” his work on the underground railroad, and his service as a Union Colonel, including commanding black soldiers, highlighting his often-overlooked, more extreme actions against slavery beyond his popular depiction in the movie ‘Glory’.
Come hear the presentation from Matthews and learn some of the more intricate back stories from the Civil War. It’s a free event. The program will be presented starting at 7:00 at the Prime Time Grille in Ottawa. There will be a drawing for some free books.
