An interesting story emerging from Anderson County History. It seems that 120 years ago this week, back in 1905, there was a problem at the West Side School in Garnett. One of the pupils at the school became unruly during the week and when corrected by his teacher, he slapped her. As you can imagine, back in that day, discipline was handled in school, and the newspaper clipping says that the boy received a sound whipping by the principal and was suspended from school.
The paper, stating they believe the action by the school was proper as student obedience is absolutely necessary to the school room, and no teacher can successfully get the best results when there is a lack of order or when a students thinks they can do as they see fit. Hmmmm…prophetically sound advice for today’s schools. We can only imagine, after the whipping and suspension, what happened to the boy when he got home and his father found out. Couldn’t have been comfortable for him. Paula Scott writes a history column in the Anderson County Review every week and supplied the story you heard today. Check out her column for more.
