A major sidewalk project on what has turned into one of the busiest pedestrian routes in Ottawa, is finally going to happen. Governor Laura Kelly and Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Secretary Calvin Reed announced that Ottawa had received a share of KDOT’s fall 2025 cost share program. No word on the amount of the award, but, it is significant. The award will help the City of Ottawa install new sidewalks on 11th street from Main to Ash, a major walkway for students attending Ottawa Middle School and Ottawa High School.

The Cost Share Program is provided to cities to support infrastructure improvements that will enhance safety, support local economies, and improve connectivity. No word on when the design and construction phase of the project will take place. Perhaps we’ll hear a bit about it at the City Commission meeting tonight.
