If you missed the opening of the 1892 time capsule last week, no worries. You can still see the items from the time capsule. They are on display through the end of the month, in the Franklin County Courthouse. Among the discoveries: local newspapers, lodge and civic records, G. A. R. memorabilia, a U. S. flag, a bible, architectural plans, envelopes with handwritten notes, including one from the architect of the courthouse, George Washburn. And a penny. These artifacts offer a snapshot of community life, organizations, and history from over 130 years ago.
A new time capsule will be sealed into the cornerstone, to be opened in 100 years. Some of the items included will be pictures of county commissioners, writings from all the school districts in the county, a flash drive containing an interview with Director of Maintenance, Brandon Sands on KOFO and many other items, including a penny, as this year marks the last year pennies are being coined. The time capsule that was opened was placed in the corner stone of the courthouse on July 4th, 1892.
