The Miami County Sheriff’s Office wants to make the community aware of a scam that has recently been reported in Miami County. Several residents have received calls from an individual identifying himself as “Mike Fletcher with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.” The caller even provides a badge number. He then claims the person should have received a letter regarding a six-year-old sexual assault case and attempts to confirm their personal information.
This is a scam.
Please remember—no legitimate law enforcement officer will ever ask for personal information over the phone or pressure you about a case you have never been notified about through proper channels. This time of year, they often see an increase in scam activity, particularly targeting older members of our community. Stay alert, be cautious, and protect your personal information. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact the sheriff’s office directly to verify any concerns.
