USD 290 has experienced declining enrollment for several years and that has led to moving the middle school to two classes in each core area, instead of three, and shifting Garfield from three classes of each grade level to two. That step continues next year and the district is trying to not reduce staff by anything other than attrition, (someone retiring or leaving the district). However, Superintendent Dr. Ryan Cobbs told board member recently there were still two positions at Garfield they need to address at the second and third grade level:
