Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert will be resigning from her role in the office on January 2nd. Luckert plans to remain as a Justice on the Supreme Court until she retires on a date to be announced. She said she intends to finish work on cases she heard before mid-October, when she took medical leave after suffering a stroke. Luckert added that this decision came with much deliberation and some hesitation. She says she never imagined she would serve on the Supreme Court or as Chief Justice and she has achieve far more than she ever imagined as a young woman from rural Kansas. Luckert says it has been an honor to serve Kansans as judge, justice and chief justice.
As Luckert leaves the court, Justice Eric Rosen will take her place as Acting Chief Justice. Rosen will formally step into the role on January 2nd. The Chief Justice role is reserved for the justice who has the most continuous years of service on the court, Rosen has been on the court for more than 20 years.
