Lawrence police officials on, Tuesday morning, December 30th, announced an arrest and charges in a decades-old cold case involving the sexual assault of juveniles. Lawrence police say the arrest was made “using the same investigative tool used to capture California’s ‘Golden State killer.’”and involved DNA from a cigarette butt recovered from the scene. David Zimbrick, of Raytown, Missouri was arrested. The arrest yesterday involved a series of child sexual assault cases that took place from 2000 to 2003. New information gained through genetic genealogy spurred an extensive nationwide investigation and resulted in an arrest. Zimbrick was interviewed in early December and a DNA sample was taken, and came back as a match. He was arrested yesterday in Raytown.
