The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency are still working on identifying the substance that was spilled in the roadway in Garnett on New Years Eve. The vehicle left the scene, but the spill affected about two miles of roadway. While the substance has still not been identified, they assure the public that they are coordinating the proper cleanup operations and have collected samples. The substance is highly corrosive and has a ph of 14, which is extremely strong– the highest concentration at the ph scale.
The EPA has established a no cost car treatment for those vehicles that were impacted by the unknown substance. The care treatment will be available starting today, January 5th, from 10:00 this morning until 7:00 this evening. It will also be available tomorrow and Wednesday during the same times. Be sure to to have your name, phone number, date and time of contact, vehicle description, damage details, and any cleaning methods already used. The EPA will be in contact with you to schedule an appointment time and location to have your vehicle cleaned.
Anyone with information on the vehicle that leaked the substance is urged to call law enforcement or the fire and emergency management office immediately.
