A bill has been introduced that would establish Easter Monday as a new federal holiday. U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri says he recently helped to introduce the Easter Monday Act of 2025, which would create a federal holiday for the Monday after Easter Sunday. Schmitt says despite only two-thirds of Americans identifying as Christian, more than 80% of Americans celebrate Easter each year and the current lack of a federal Easter holiday, significantly limits Americans’ ability to celebrate with friends, family, and church communities.

According to the senator, around 81% of Americans celebrate Easter – about two thirds of the American Christian population. Meanwhile, Easter Monday, is a national holiday in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Spain, New Zealand and more. Schmitt says the new holiday would be pro-family, allowing many to celebrate the holiday more easily together. An Easter Monday could also extend the weekend’s $15 billion travel impact with an additional $1 billion or more. Lastly, Schmitt says the bill would help bridge a gap in the federal holidays, which currently exists between Presidents and Memorial Day.
