Remember Apollo 13? Some will remember the actual flight, some, the movie. Either way, the man who saved Apollo 13 and led a team of engineers that designed an emergency apparatus made of cardboard, plastic bags and duct tape to save the crew of Apollo 13 after an explosion, in flight, has died at the age of 95. Ed Smylie, was the leader of the team who created an emergency co2 filter adapter, when astronauts faced lethal carbon dioxide buildup in their crippled spacecraft. He described the situation in a recent interview:
The Apollo 13 crew landed safely, and according to those first on the scene, the first thing Crew Commander Jim Lovell did was ask to be taken to the man who solved the issue and got them back safely. Thank you Ed for all you did for our country. You are a true American Hero.
