Paola USD 368 School Board heard from the public, students and even some staff members regarding “Safe Zone” signs. The signs were removed from the high school several months ago when the board determined they violated school policy of being neutral. Since then, every meeting , a group of students representing not only the LGBQ populations, but others as well have come before the board to talk about the decision. The group, Allied Panther called for more public input from the community and the public answered. At Monday night’s meeting, several people spoke in favor of the signs, saying that like it or not, officials have created a not-so-safe place for many kids in the building:
With the school year close to over, the Paola School Board is not putting the Safe Zone signs back up, although the board did address rewriting district handbook policy, students still feel stuck.
