Sam Smith was one of the most decorated and recognized students as he grew up in Ottawa. He was awarded for his work in community service and volunteer work by the City of Ottawa, numerous times. As an adult, Sam’s desire to serve the community grew. He became a deputy for the Franklin County Sheriff’s office. Unfortunately, his life and career was cut short, as he died in a car crash in July of 2010, responding to an emergency. Sheriff Jeff Richards on how they remember Smith:
Last night, May 21st, at the Ottawa High School Awards Banquet, this year’s Sam Smith Memorial Scholarships were awarded to seniors Danya Mitchell and Jamie Winslow. The two were interns at the Sheriff’s Office this semester. Last week the third scholarship was awarded to Central Heights senior, Emilee Welch. Like Sam, all have an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement and serving their communities.
