A few weeks ago, people were being hit with scam texts from the Kansas Turnpike Authority about unpaid toll fees, and now authorities warn that there is another that could be showing up on your cell phone soon. The messages are similar to the ones scammers have sent to thousands of people in previous months. The most recent claims some type of enforcement will begin after May 11th if you don’t pay. It warns that if you don’t pay, your license will be suspended and you will face legal action which could damage tour credit, and you will be an illegal driver. Each text includes a link or URL instructing the receiver to visit a fake website. The site is designed to look like an official website that belongs to the KTA, KDOT or Drive Ks.
Investigators warn the websites are fake, repeat…this is a scam! The Kansas Turnpike Authority does not send text instant messages, or emails to collect unpaid tolls, unless you have signed up for the service. Authorities say that anyone who gets a scam message should report it to the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Crime Complaint Center. If you provided payment information to a fake site, contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
