Armadillos, we all know them as those little animals that roll up in a ball and look like mini dinosaurs? Now, their population is starting to explode in this area of Kansas. But, why? According to experts, winters in Kansas have become milder over recent years, with fewer deep freezes that would once have killed off these warm-weather creatures. Hmm…I wonder if these experts have lived in Kansas the past few winters?
Another reason, and I get this one…highways. Armadillos aren’t just wandering north by accident—they’re following the highways, railways, and cleared land, avoiding dense forest and prairies.
Plus, kansas offers the perfect menu for armadillos. A huger abundance of insects, grubs, and worms, the state’s soil is a smorgasbord for these natural foragers.
Great for the animals but no so much for homeowners who sometimes wake up to find their yards riddled with holes.
