Memorial Day is a special day in America. The Federal holiday is every year on the final Monday of May. It used to be called Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and the Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the turn of the century, in 1900, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service to the nation. Ottawa will hold Memorial Day Service today, May 23rd. It will be held at the Franklin County War Memorial at 4th and Main at 12:30 this afternoon.
The importance of this day will not, and should not, go unnoticed here in Ottawa. Please plan on attending the Ottawa Memorial Day Service, today. Take a look at the names on the wall. Think about the sacrifices they made, fighting for the rights and freedoms that you have today. Think about it. Thank them and remember not to let the efforts of our military be taken for granted.
