WESTPHALIA — A group of more than 100 people protested a plan to close the Westphalia post office recently. The Anderson County Review reported that they weren’t happy with the proposal to move Westphalia’s mail service to Colony, noting the closest route between the two cities is 16 miles of gravel roads. District postal offical Mike Behrend attended the meeting and said that’s just one proposal. Westphalia, Kincaid and Welda are targeted for closure as the U.S. Postal Service looks for ways to deal with budget shortfalls. Westphalia revenues gradually climbed until last year, when business plummeted, Behrend said. Several residents told Behrend they use the office and would be face a hardship if it’s closed. The closure study should be concluded in about four months, he said.
