A pillar and foundation of Ottawa Main Street passed away recently. Gery Didde, a lifelong Ottawa resident was part of the graduating class of 1967 at Ottawa High School. His family owned and operated Didde Office Supply and Printing since 1950, where they originally opened at 308 South Main, selling supplies, furniture, books (including books needed for the rural schools) and other gifts. The site moved to its present location at 334 Main in the mid 1960s. Gerry’s father, Bernard, died unexpectedly in 1968, so Gerry left college at Benedictine and came home to operate the business with his mom.
Gerry served as co-owner and operator of the business alongside his brother, Mike. Gerry was a hardworking man and dedicated his time into his business for many years, and many people remember him driving throughout Ottawa in the “Didde Van”. Gerry was the definition of dedication and relentless work ethic. Gerry was more than just a committed businessman, he was a dedicated lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where if you didn’t hear him leading music from the altar or balcony, you heard his strong, deep voice in the congregation. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. In his younger years, Gerry was a volunteer reserve for the Ottawa Police & Fire Department.
A Rosary was held last night at Dengel and Son, and a mass of Christian burial will be held this morning at 10:00 at Sacred Heart Church in )ttawa.
