The Ottawa Fire Department has released more information about the house fire at 743 South Poplar on Monday, july 7th. They said a neighbor saw the flames first and called 911, just after 3:00 that morning. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back side of the home, extending into the second floor. They attacked the fire from different angles, but it took over an hour before the fire was considered under control. Fire investigators on the scene determined the fire was accidental in nature. An Ottawa man living in the house was able to evacuate safely with his dog before firefighters arrived. Damage estimated to be at least $85,000. Assistant Fire Chief Stewart Wolzen thanked LOH fire crews for providing manpower at the fire and Franklin County EMS for rehabilitation support.

Another fire last weekend on Eisenhower Road heavily damaged a home and we have learned that an Ottawa firefighter was injured while fighting the blaze. Fire Chief Shaw Dillon says the firefighter was injured during mop up operations. He stepped into a concealed floor drain that had been covered by insulation and his boot filled with hot water left over from the fire, resulting in first and second degree burns on his lower leg. Franklin County EMS provided immediate care and he was transported to KU Medical Center for treatment of the burns and remained overnight for observation. He is now home and recovering with his family.

KOFO wishes him a full and speedy recovery and thank all firefighters for their dedication to protecting all our communities.
