Recently we talked about turtles in the road and whether you should stop and help them across, or….not. There are a lot of turtles on the roadways right now and whether or not to help them on their journey comes down to one thing…safety. Law enforcement officials all across America are asking people to make sure it is safe before stopping and, never stop on a busy highway. Two incidents in the past two weeks have prompted the warning. In late June a man in south western Kansas stopped on a two lane highway to help a turtle and another vehicle behind him swerved to avoid him, lost control and rolled, suffering serious injuries. A second incident in Florida last week where a man stopped and was hit and killed by another vehicle.
Officials remind people that if they do stop to turn on flashers and make sure the road is safe, then move the turtle to the side it is heading toward, and, if it is a large turtle, like a snapper, just leave it alone.
