Shortly after 10:30 Friday night, July 18th, the Anderson County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a patient in cardiac arrest at a residence in Garnett. Upon arrival, public safety personnel initiated life-saving resuscitation efforts. During the response, Anderson County EMS requested the Garnett Fire Department to perform a check for carbon monoxide inside the home. Readings revealed a fatal-level concentration of carbon monoxide present in the residence, prompting crews to evacuate the scene immediately, due to the extremely dangerous conditions.

An EMS “All-Call” was initiated to bring in additional personnel and resources. Three additional ambulances responded to assist with the incident. In total, eight public safety personnel and one private citizen were transported to Anderson County Hospital for medical evaluation due to suspected carbon monoxide exposure.

Garnett police warn that carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, usually caused by incomplete burning in furnaces, heaters or any fuel burning appliance in an enclosed space. They encourage all residents to install a carbon monoxide detector in their homes.
