Yesterday, I sat on my porch and watched traffic go by on Ash Street, one of the major thoroughfares in town when it comes to getting kids to school. I was amazed how many drivers were either speeding, looking at their phones, or both. 42 out of 100 drivers! Ottawa Police Chief, Adam Weingartner, says it only takes one to cause an accident. With school starting he says it’s important to be extra cautious, and they will be watching:
School starts tomorrow, August 12th, in Ottawa, for 6th graders, 9th graders and new students. The first full day is Wednesday… Thursday in Central Heights, Wellsville, Baldwin City, Anderson County and Lyndon. West Franklin gets an extra week, they start next Wednesday, as does Osawatomie, Paola, Louisburg, and Spring Hill. Friday the 15th for Osage City, and Santa Fe Trail doesn’t start until the 21st.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s department will be patrolling county schools, as well, to make sure drivers are being safe, and students arrive safely.
