A Baker University class is looking to preserve some history of the area. In the Museum Studies Archaeological Field School, students go outside the classroom to uncover the past by excavating the remains of the Prairie City Catholic Mission, a long-forgotten church along the Santa fe Trail. Associate Professor Nicholaus Pumphrey leads the class:
The course blends hands-on archaeological practice with historical interpretation. Students dig, sift, and document artifacts, learning how material culture and written records come together to tell a fuller, more inclusive story of the region’s history. Students will continue the excavation this fall.
