The State of Kansas says it made a counting error on payments sent to school districts for medicaid repayments and school districts must now repay the money to the state. The issue affected seven fiscal years, between 2016 and 2022 and impacts 218 Kansas school districts.

In Miami county alone, the five school district have to pay back $403,406. That is lead by Spring Hill at over $154,000, followed by Paola at just over $78,000, Osawatomie at nearly $69,000, Louisburg with over $56,000, and Prairie View at nearly $46,000. No word from any of the schools on how that will affect their budgets for the upcoming year.

Schools like Prairie View, owing less than $50,000, had that amount withheld from their June medicaid payment. Schools that owe over $50,000 were given two options: have funds withheld from the June medicaid payment, or offset the recoupment over the next four quarters of payments. No word on what option the four districts in Miami County that were over $50,000 chose.
